to this place a level country, not a
mountain in the whole way, &
very few hills that a waggon need
lock in going down, but now for about
17 miles forward the land was con-
siderably hilly, & in places stony,
for the first 9 or 10 miles pretty thickly
settled, with good improvements; from
thence to Canasoraga, a smart water
that runs into Oneida lake, about
5 miles, mostly woods. Here we fed
our horses & rested several hours, the
days being very warm, as we descended
a long hill down to this place, we
kill’d a rattlesnake, about 4 feet long,
as thick in the middle as a good
pitchfork handle, but it was much
smaller towards its head; it was of
a lively dark brown, conveying a
