as a reason for their disappointing us yesterday
& today, that one of his daughter had been taken
very bad, and was now likely to die, & that another
of his family had fallen off a horse & broke her arm
& that he could not go with us for two or three days
longer till he should see whether his child would
die or get better; that he was very sorry he could
not go as he had promised, & that he should be very
glad we would wait for him the time proposed;
but if we could not be easy to do so he would fur-
nish us with a guide through the Wilderness
to Buffalo.
We concluded to accept of the latter proposal & to set
out early next morning, with a view to spend a few
days amongst friends at Canada, where we might
get our Clothes washed & c. & wait the proposed time
for the Indian’s arrival at Buffalo aforesaid which
was now stipulated to be this day week, & Indian
John, a sober Man & near neighbour to our settle-
ment, undertook to pilot us, & promised to be ready
early in the morning.
