remaining untouched, where there has
been for years past, pot ash manufacto-
ries carried on; they convey to the trav-
eller that the people have no idea
the land would be benefited by spread-
ing them over it, or otherwise that
they are too lazy to do it: a few
miles back some men were hoeing very
poor corn in a field where I had no
doubt but there were 3 or 400 loads
of ashes in a heap untouch’d; I call’d
aloud to them to know why they did
not spread that heap of ashes over
the field, & so have good corn, & not be
hoeing such poor stuff as that was;
they stood like men amazed, made no
reply, & we pass’d on; and a few
miles further we saw a large pot ash
works close on the river, so that when
the ashes were thrown out of the
