not expecting we would want them
to go further but when we let them
know our house was 9 miles further up
the river, & we wanted the goods taken
there, they submitted to comply, with
much reluctance & not until we first
engaged to give them three dollars ex-
traordinary, & ½ a dollar to an Indian
to pilot them, the captain saying he
was a stranger higher up the river.

We have been entirely unable since
our arrival here to have any conversation
with the Indians without an interpreter
there being very few among them who
understand any English, & fewer who
can or will express one word, & our
interpreter not being ready at the business
it was a discouragement to us to touch
on religious subjects; we had a strong
desire to know if they had any religious
