JOURNAL.
Many of my friends having been solicitous
for the privilege of a perusal of
the minutes I
preserved in the course of my late visit to the
Western
Indians, I have been induced to devote
a small portion of leisure time to
the purpose of
attempting such an arrangement of them, as
would
convey, intelligibly, both the route we
took, and the various circumstances
attending
upon our journey.
The judicious reader will doubtless make
proper allowances for the
difficulty there is in
composing an entertaining diary over that of a
history, where circumstances are not necessarily
confined to day and
time.
As a suitable introduction to my Journal, I
deem it proper to insert the
following letter. It
will serve to show the intercourse which had
previously taken place between the Indian
Committee
some of the Indian chiefs of the Western tribes.
