limestone country, all thick woods; we
have now enter’d what is call’d the
military lands in Onandago county,
& I do not recollect of ever seeing 8 miles
of land more beautiful both for situ-
ation, & quality, & timber, than this.
As I rode over it I anticipated the
time, when this land will be crowded
with wealthy farmers, abounding with
large stocks of cattle & c. vieing each
other with their fields of wheat, corn,
grass & c. & regaling themselves round
their tables, richly laden with provision.
Here we arrived at the outlet of Seneca
lake
, a stream perhaps as large as three
of Brandywine; when we first came on
the river it look’d very deep, & gliding
along with an easy current, but in a
little time we came to a rapid, a
mile in length, on which are erected
