Pittsburg, by a very reputa-
ble character that for 30 days past
upon an average, he thought there had
been from 11 to 12 of these boats contain
ing from 20 to 50 persons, so loaded,
passing by that town each day. They
gently move down with the current,
and when they come to the mouths
of the
Sciota and other rivers, their
boats are of no further use; for their
construction is such they cannot be
taken up the stream, and are therefore
often sold for a trifle, or turned a drift.
I went up the west side of the river,
and in about 6 miles passed through
a small village called

town, then up the river to 10 mile
