Summary: Nondenominational, itinerant evangelist from Whitby, England. She was the daughter of a Methodist preacher but her beliefs closely paralleled those of Friends and she travelled “under the appearance and character of a Quaker.” Ripley travelled to the United States several times for the “good of the poor Africans.” In 1805 she landed in New York and then visited Native Americans at Oneida, South Settlement, Stockbridge, and Brothertown.
